Matty Healy Deactivates Twitter After Lucy Dacus Rebuke

The 1975 frontman's account vanished after Dacus criticized his "ableist" joke.

Background

Matty Healy, the lead singer of the band The 1975, has deactivated his Twitter account after musician Lucy Dacus responded to his attempt at a joke about her band Boygenius, which she fronts alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.

Healy's tweet, which has since been deleted, referenced a recent interview in which Dacus discussed her experiences with mental illness. Healy's joke was widely criticized as being both insensitive and ableist.

Dacus responded to Healy's tweet with a quote tweet, in which she wrote, "I'm not going to engage with ableist jokes. This is harmful and a**holish behavior. Do better.".

Healy's decision to deactivate his Twitter account comes after he was previously "soft-canceled" for linking the murder of George Floyd to one of The 1975's topical songs in a Twitter post.

It is unclear whether Healy will reactivate his Twitter account in the future.
